After Lydia died, I had a very difficult time finding a therapist who had the expertise of working with someone like me who had dealt with trauma surrounding the sudden death of their child. I was looking for someone who was formally trained in grief and trauma work as well as modalities like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Unfortunately, it was seemingly impossible to find who I was looking for, especially in-network with my insurance and accepting new clients.
Love From Lydia encourages mental health professionals to seek out specialized training in grief, loss, and trauma, increasing the competency and availability of trained individuals to help bereaved families more effectively. The focus of the annual scholarship is to train clinicians, particularly those newly in the field and who have an interest in working with parents and caregivers who have lost children. Special consideration is offered to those who are in network with Medicaid and commercial insurance as well as those willing to commit to offering a sliding scale or pro bono sessions. The scholarships are given in memory of Lydia Schwartz.
